NRDC is seeking a legal intern to work with the Litigation Team in our San Francisco office for spring semester 2020. The San Francisco Litigation Team is one of four branches of NRDC’s Litigation Team; the other branches are in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York. The legal intern selected for this position may participate in writing briefs, drafting complaints, preparing legal analyses, obtaining affidavits, and investigating violations of environmental and health laws. Interns are also invited to participate in litigation planning and strategy meetings. Our interns play an active role on the frontlines to protect our planet and the communities that depend on it.
Legal interns have the choice between receiving academic credit or receiving a stipend of $750/week for their internship. We can help with applications or other materials that are needed to secure the credit (e.g., preparation of workplans and evaluations, meetings with academic advisors).
The internship will begin in January and end before exams. Start and end dates and other scheduling details are negotiable, but we look for a minimum time commitment of two days a week in our office over the course of an academic term. Full-time interns are welcome.
In assessing candidates for the internship, we look for:
- Exceptional legal writing and analytical skills;
- Strong oral communication skills;
- Experience effectively working on a team;
- Creativity and resourcefulness;
- Commitment to public service, equity, or justice;
- Demonstrated ability to work with people across different social identities and backgrounds; and
- Record of academic and/or professional accomplishment.
NRDC’s values: We value justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are aware that the field of law, and environmental law in particular, has not historically been inclusive or equitable to people holding marginalized identities, including black, indigenous, and people of color. We also know that celebrating and actively welcoming diverse perspectives that come from a diversity of identities will help us innovate to solve the planet's most pressing environmental crises. We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where the most underrepresented voices are amplified, promoting equity in our practices, policies, and the work we take on, and valuing diversity in our workplace and our constituency.
