The AARP Virginia State Office is looking for a strong undergraduate intern to join its communications team for the calendar year 2020. The intern will be directed by the Associate State Director for communications and will provide communications support for state and federal advocacy campaigns, voter education, outreach programs, and other local initiatives. This is a great opportunity for the ideal intern to develop solid work experience with the largest social welfare organization in the country while contributing to projects that affect our members who are age 50 and older.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • In this role, the intern will help staff communicate with AARP members, media, and the public, focusing on video and digital media channels. You will develop content for the state office webpage, social media sites, member emails, and e-newsletters, prepare and distribute news releases and make media calls. 
  • The primary nature of interaction is coordinative with AARP Virginia state office staff and volunteers. The intern is a vital supportive role to AARP Virginia’s advocacy communications projects. The intern will work directly with the Associate State Director for Communications to complete tasks related to dashboard goals.
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; be in good academic standing; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors or rising first or second year graduate students.
Skills/Experience: 
  • AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education
  • program.
  • Proficiency with social media (including Facebook and Twitter) is required. Experience with social media posting platforms such as Sprinklr or Hootsuite are helpful.
  • Experience with a website hosting tool such as Brightspot or WordPress is helpful.
  • Experience conducting research, editing photos and video and writing press releases is essential. Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word and PowerPoint. Interest in aging, communications/public relations, and political issues
  • helpful.
