Areas of Responsibility: 
  • The AARP Virginia State Office is looking for a strong undergraduate intern to join its communications team in summer, 2018. The intern will be directed by the Associate State Director for communication and will provide communications support for state and federal advocacy campaigns, voter education, anti-hunger and other local initiatives.  In this role, the intern will help staff communicate with AARP members, media and the public, focusing on digital media channels. You will develop content for the state office webpage, social media sites, member emails and e-newsletters, prepare and distribute news releases and make media calls.
  • You must be available at least 20 hours per week, and available to stay at the office for at least 4 hours at a time and must be able to be in the office by 9 a.m. on a Monday or a Tuesday.  As an AARP intern, you may be asked to participate in local events throughout Virginia and will be reimbursed for travel.  The office is conveniently located in downtown Richmond.
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and considered rising juniors or seniors.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Candidates must be self-motivated, collaborative, be able to learn quickly and take directions well.  Must be able to work independently and make decisions regarding editorial content under the supervision of the Associate State Director.  The primary nature of interaction is coordinative with AARP Virginia state office staff and volunteers.  The intern is a vital supportive role to AARP Virginia’s advocacy communications projects.  The intern will work directly with the Associate State Director for Communications to complete tasks related to dashboard goals. 
  • Preferred majors include Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Political Science though all will be considered.
  • Proficiency with social media (including Facebook and Twitter) is required.  Experience with platforms such as Hootsuite and Spredfast are helpful.  Experience with WordPress preferred.  Experience conducting research, editing photos and writing press releases a plus.  Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word and PowerPoint. Interest in aging, communications/public relations and political issues helpful.
