Ohio Stream Restore Corps is a program administered by Rural Action that places 31 AmeriCorps into communities throughout Appalachian Ohio to perform direct service related to watershed restoration, environmental education, economy building through heritage tourism, and zero waste. Members are placed with Rural Action programs and local partner organizations to serve the needs of the region. Through their direct service and the volunteers they mobilize, AmeriCorps members help build the capacity of local communities while gaining valuable certifications and experience for the future.

Areas of Responsibility: 

OSRC AmeriCorps members serve at the following host site offices:

  • Rural Action Watersheds, Athens/Perry/Tuscarawas County
  • Rural Action Environmental Education, Athens County
  • Rural Action Zero Waste Program, Athens County
  • Rural Action Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Athens County
  • Raccoon Creek Partnership, Athens County
  • Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Perry/Hocking/Licking County
  • Rural Action Entrepreneurial Communities, Athens County
  • Rural Action Social Enterprise, Athens County
  • Wayne National Forest, Athens County
  • Buckeye Trail Association, Athens County
  • Dairy Barn Arts Center, Athens County
  • Stuart’s Opera House, Athens County
  • Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area, Perry County
  • Camp Oty’Okwa, Hocking County
  • Captina Creek Conservancy, Belmont County
  • The Wilds Restoration Ecology, Muskingum County
  • United Plant Savers, Meigs County
Educational Background: 
High school diploma
Some knowledge of community development or Appalachian Ohio preferred
Passion for environmental restoration and community development
Skills/Experience: 

All AmeriCorps members need the following skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Computer skills, including database management
  • Experience recruiting and working with volunteers
  • Interest in watershed restoration, environmental education, heritage tourism or equivalent field of study
  • Public speaking and the ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting
  • Ability to serve flexible hours, including evenings and weekends if needed
  • Some positions require the ability to hike extended distances over rough terrain and the ability to carry up to 40 lb. of equipment  
  • Mode of transportation and a valid driver's license needed 
  • General knowledge of Appalachian Ohio culture is preferred
Compensation/Benefits: 

Ohio Stream Restore Corps members serve a term of 12 months accumulating a total of 1,700 hours of community based service, an average service load of 35 hours a week.

Benefits for AmeriCorps Positions Include:

  • An annual living allowance of $13,992
  • An education award totaling $6,095 for a completed term of service, eligible for existing federal student loans or future education expenses at accredited universities
  • Child care allowance for members who qualify
  • Healthcare Coverage for AmeriCorps members
  • Mileage reimbursement for travel during service activities

Positions allow for part-time outside employment or attendance at an institution of higher learning during service year.
