Audubon Arizona seeks motivated, energetic interns to assist with wildlife and habitat monitoring on the Bureau of Land Management’s Agua Fria National Monument and other public lands. Interns will assist Audubon biologists conducting surveys for the Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) to look into the birds’ presence/absence, breeding behavior, and habitat preferences. Interns may also assist with data management, other conservation efforts, and educational programs at the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center (3131 S Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85040). 

All training will be provided. Transportation between the Rio Salado Audubon Center and field sites will also be provided. Positions will last approximately 9 weeks, from June 10 through August 2 and involve approximately 12-20 hours of work per week. Work schedules will be variable and will include some early morning and overnight work.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist conservation scientists with monitoring, research, and management activites for the Western Yellow-billed Cuckoo and other priority species
  • Navigate survey transects using a GPS unit and tophographic map
  • Conduct point count surveys at multiple locations
  • Hike one to five miles over moderate to difficult terrain
  • Assist with habitat data collection at survey locations
  • Manage and maintain field equipment
  • Assist with data entry and management
  • Assist with Audubon conservation education programs
Educational Background: 
Be a current high school student or in the summer following your graduating year
Skills/Experience: 
  • Be 16 years older (18 or over preferred)
  • Possess a valid driver's license and/or have reliable transportation to/from the Audubon Center, even at odd hours
  • Be able to commit to the entire length of the internship (June 11 through August 10. (Unpaid time off permitted))
  • Enjoy active, outdoor work including hiking and observing wildlife (training in field methods provided)
  • Have a passion for nature and an interest in environmental issues, birds, wildlife, and conservation
  • Be reliable and punctual
  • Have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; be a team player
  • Maintain a professional and friendly attitude even during difficult field conditions
  • Be courteous and respectful of others
