The Make-A-Wish internship program is designed for current undergraduate or graduate students who have a goal of being a marketing communications professional in the nonprofit sector. The purpose of the internship program is to help undergraduate and/or graduate students further cultivate their writing skills through a real-life work experience.
The Writing Intern will work closely with the Creative Services team to create high-quality written communications for internal and external audiences. The writing intern's work will be reflective of the Make-A-Wish brand’s tone and messaging and will help share the Make-A-Wish mission.
Areas of Responsibility:
Throughout the internship, duties and responsibilities could include:
- Assisting the Editorial Manager with current writing projects, such as donor solicitations, stewardship pieces for corporate sponsors, wish stories for chapter collateral and video scripts
- Supporting long-term projects, such as documentation of wish story assets
- Creating and publishing digital content on wish.org
- Contributing to project and campaign brainstorms
- Researching recent wishes for projects and stories
- Researching nonprofit storytelling trends
Educational Background:
The ideal intern will be a junior or senior working toward a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or higher in communications, journalism, creative writing, English or a related field;
Skills/Experience:
- Applicants should also have a minimum of 1 year of professional work experience; Knowledge of and experience with the Make-A-Wish mission and service population is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and strong editing skills
- Advanced research, interview and storytelling skills
- The ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
- Highly organized; comfortable writing a variety of pieces in short periods of time
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with chapter, celebrity, wish family, sponsor and donor information
- Ability to adapt quickly to project management procedures and software
- Familiarity with AP style
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and internet research tools
- Experience with digital content management systems preferred
- Some volunteer experience preferred, although not required
- Openness to learning and growing within the internship experience
