Perform onsite construction tasks necessary for completing owner-occupied residential repair projects; perform technical carpentry repairs while working with key HFHP staff, subcontractors and homeowners; effectively utilize the labor and enthusiasm of Habitat’s volunteer workforce; uphold HFHP’s quality and safety standards; work as a community partner; and promote Habitat’s mission to eliminate substandard housing and revitalize neighborhoods.
At Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia (“HFHP”), we are builders who work alongside, not for, others. We are driven by accountability and defined by our stick-to-itiveness. Habitat’s Repair Program expands on its traditional homeownership model to provide critical home repair services to low-income homeowners in Philadelphia. The goal of the Repair Program is to preserve families in their homes by making their houses safe, warm, dry, and energy efficient.
Location: The Habitat Philadelphia office is located at 1829 N. 19th Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19121. Some travel to Habitat’s home building and home repair sites, as well as special event venues may occur as needed.
TECHNICAL WORK
- Operate as a carpenter for all occupied residential repair projects- interior and exterior, ranging from structural repair to finish work
- Perform general masonry and basic mechanical (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) repairs
- Work in a way that prioritizes client health, safety as well as home durability and energy efficiency
- Independently plan, organize, and efficiently execute assigned tasks; maintain Habitat work vehicle, tools, and equipment
TASK MANAGEMENT
- Coordinate with Repair Project Managers and Site Supervisors to schedule tasks; communicate regularly regarding changes to work.
- Manage project tasks, including the purchase of materials and gathering of tools and equipment
- Use a tablet-based project management program to track and document project progress
- Communicate with homeowners to set expectations regarding workday schedules, project staging, potential disruptions, house security, and safety
- Manage tasks in a way that is fully respectful of occupant living space- plan workdays to allow ample time for task completion and thorough site clean-up
- Implement HFHP safety practices and ensure that all employees, subcontractors, and volunteers adhere to these standards
- Adhere to OSHA, BPI, and EPA standards and practices
- Maintain Habitat work vehicle, tools, and equipment
- Work together with Habitat site-staff to lead volunteers in basic repair tasks, including workday preparation, skills and safety training, and close volunteer supervision and engagement throughout the workday
- Exemplify a positive and respectful work attitude
- Considerable knowledge of residential construction, a minimum of 3 years of related job experience
- Expertise in renovation carpentry- including both interior and exterior work ranging from structural to finishes
- Familiarity with local building codes
- Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it
- A sensitive and compassionate posture when working with people who are in difficult and complex life situations
- Professional attitude and strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with unskilled volunteers and in diverse populations
- Ability to operate a tablet/iPad to access project management program
- Valid driver’s license with no major violations
Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:
- Knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC repair
- Knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, building science principals as well as an understanding of house-as-a-system concepts
- Prior volunteering experience
Physical Requirements to Perform Duties:
- Ability to perform all construction duties, such as: lifting up to 80 lbs, climbing extension ladders and scaffolding; working in unconditioned workspaces in the heat of summer and cold of winter
