The Facilities and Grounds Manager will lead staff and volunteers in day to day management of the physical assets of Audubon Pennsylvania with primary responsibilities at The John James Audubon Center and periodic assignments at The Discovery Center (Philadelphia, PA).  This is full-time position based in Audubon, PA with benefits. The Facilities Manager reports to the John James Audubon Center Manager with additional assignments from the Deputy Director of Centers and Operations.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage and supervise the Events Supervisor and Site Coordinators to ensure events are properly schedule and effectively executed; periodically perform event related task before, during and after events.
  • Create clean, safe and pleasant environment for museum visitors, event guests, and student groups to explore the site through the proper and proactive maintenance of the grounds, vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate and supervise operation of equipment required to mow and trip grass, plow snow, treat surfaces for ice, trim trees, and clean floors/windows; perform routine maintenance of equipment and/or necessary arrange for professional service.
  • Manage grounds and native gardens for the benefit of birds; recommend practices that create the optimal habitats.
  • Regularly serve a “Manager on Call”; respond for emergencies and security issues; serve as primary contact with Montgomery County rangers and security company.
  • Create annual maintenance budget; maintain a work order system to prioritize needs and allocate financial and human resources; maintain inventory and maintenance/repair records for all Audubon-owned equipment and vehicles.
  • Plan and implement predictive and preventive maintenance plan and review/monitor effectiveness.
  • Supervise individual volunteers and large volunteer groups assigned to facilities projects, such a gardening, cleaning and minor repairs.
  • Assist in establishing and implementing Center security including procedures for opening and closing buildings.
  • Complete and/or oversee minor repairs to exhibits and structures.
  • Provide effective staff and volunteer trainings to ensure safe operation of equipment and appropriate use of chemicals; maintains OSHA records.
  • Works as critical member of the JJAC team; participates in staff meetings and task forces; proactively suggests solutions to operating challenges.
  • Work schedule will include weekends and some evening.

Discovery Center

  • As assigned assist with maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Maintain inventory and maintenance/repair records for all Audubon-owned equipment and vehicles at the site.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or equivalent required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5-7 years' experience in landscaping, facilities or project management, building maintenance and/or as a contractor.
  • Experience working at a public park, historical site or property management firm a plus. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Must possess demonstrated, basic knowledge and experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical procedures, general building and vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience with identifying qualified contractors for facilities work, managing a bid process, and supervising them to project Strong leadership, customer service, and interpersonal skills; capable of working effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and on difficult terrain.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule (weekends, evening, holiday) as required.
  • Commitment to the mission of Audubon; knowledge of birds highly desirable.
  • Must have valid PA driver’s license and clean driving record.
