The Digital Organizer leads efforts across a variety of MediaJustice (MJ) campaigns to amplify our narrative and campaign strategies to fight for racial, economic and gender justice in a digital age. Primary responsibilities include strategy development and implementation, social media content creation and channel management, email marketing, online advocacy support, website management, and graphic design. We seek someone with attention to detail, a desire to innovate and experiment, strong communication and critical-thinking skills, flexibility, and excitement about creative problem-solving. Traditionally, this position requires frequent travel (20%) and can be remote or based in our Oakland, CA, offices. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, all of our staff and programs will remain remote. The Digital Organizer is a full-time (100% FTE) position at MediaJustice (MJ).

The Digital Organizer is supervised by the Narrative Director, and is a key member of the MJ’s Communications Team, which includes one other digital organizer.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Organizing, Advocacy, and Marketing 

  • Lead development of online petitions and other digital advocacy efforts to support field campaigns in collaboration with the Narrative Director and another digital organizer. 

  • Write email alerts.

  • Identify and implement list-building activities to expand MJ’s online base and deepen engagement with campaigns.

  • Analyze data of MJ’s online engagement tools and metrics. 

  • Produce creative graphics and visuals for digital organizing activities. 

 

Social Media and Website Management

  • Develop visual and editorial content for the MJ’s website and various social media channels.

  • Write and edit blog content. 

  • Update and maintain the editorial calendar and other elements of MJ’s internal communications infrastructure.

 

Organizational Activities

  • Participate in regular check-ins with the Narrative Director. 

  • Attend organizational and network meetings, as appropriate.

  • Live out our values and be an active participant in conversations and activities dedicated to organizational culture. 

  • Complete all other assignments as required by supervisors, project leads, and the Executive Director.

Skills/Experience: 

Demonstrated Experience:

  • Three or more years experience in digital organizing and campaigning and communications work.

  • Experience with digital organizing platforms like Phone2Action, Salsa, or NationBuilder

  • Experience with email marketing platforms like MailChimp 

  • Experience with social media content development and management across a variety of channels, particularly Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. 

  • Baseline knowledge of media rights, access, or representation issue and political analysis of racial, economic and gender justice movements. 

  • Strong writing skills across a variety of platforms and mediums (i.e social media, email, petitions, blog, op-ed etc).  

  • Graphic design skills 

  • Self-motivated, deadline-driven, well-organized, able to work independently, and in a fast paced environment with a full team by your side. 

  • Strong project management skills. 

  • Experience collaborating with coalition partners and serving as organization representative in coalition spaces. 

  • Committed to a racial justice vision and organizations that move it forward.

Qualifications:

Digital Organizers at MediaJustice are visionaries, strategic, detail-oriented, have a strong desire to innovate and experiment, strong communications and critical thinking skills, excited by creative problem solving and see communications and media as a strategic battleground for meaningful change. You’re comfortable developing and planning digital campaign strategy and implementing a variety of digital organizing tactics at local, state and national levels. You have a base knowledge of communication rights, access or representation as well as broader knowledge and political analysis of racial, economic and gender justice movements. 

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience maintaining an organizational website. 

  • Experience working remotely as part of a dispersed staff team.

  • Knowledge of allied networks such as Mijente, Black Youth Project 100, Black Lives Matter, and United We Dream, among others.

  • Familiarity with media justice organizations, networks, leaders and issues.

  • Experience with Salesforce, Basecamp, G Suite and Slack for internal communications and project management

  • Experience in facilitation and training.

Compensation/Benefits: 

The Digital Organizer is a 40 hour/week, full-time exempt position, and reports to the Narrative Director. Salary is between $60K - $65K DOE with full medical, dental and vision benefits, optional 401(k), a substantial vacation package, and a quarterly personal wellness stipend.
