Development & Outreach Intern (New York Committee)

This job is no longer available

New York, NY, USA
Full-time
The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a student to intern with the New York Committee team in the New York office. Ideally, the candidate will be available from January 2018 until to May 2018. The internship may have flexible hours within the 9 am to 6 pm weekday office hours.

This internship is best suited for students interested in learning the ins and outs of fundraising administration and events coordination in a dynamic, hands-on, and engaging large human rights organization. The New York Committee team strives to prepare the selected candidate for a career in fundraising and non-profit work through fulfilling and stimulating intern projects.

Internships are unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Areas of Responsibility:
The internship will focus on:
  • Event planning for New York outreach events including the 2018 New York Annual Dinner and the 2017 New York Film Festival Opening Night Screening and Reception;
  • Writing acknowledgment letters and other correspondence;
  • Liaising with donors;
  • Coordinating support for local advocacy issues; and
  • Conducting research for development and outreach projects. Interns will gain knowledge of the organization's priority human rights issues and build skills in research, event planning, and fundraising. Interns will have opportunities to attend planning and department meetings with staff and to take full advantage of in-house trainings and briefings. This internship will provide training in Raiser’s Edge, one of the most utilized CRM systems within non-profit fundraising.
