The Global Information Technology Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a student to intern with the Helpdesk team in the New York office. Ideally, the candidate will be available from September 2019 until December 2019 (dates and times are flexible).  

Students will have the opportunity to intern alongside the Helpdesk team and expand their technical knowledge.

Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization and close supervision by HRW staff. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements. 

Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The internship will focus on:

  • Researching and testing new products that could be deployed to staff;
  • Joining in on discussions and helping build tools to aid the deployment of certain platforms;
  • Supporting creation of simple and descriptive resources (i.e. training guides) for staff;
  • Using and understanding Office 365 tools from both a user and administrator perspective;
  • Learning troubleshooting techniques while responding to IT support tickets; and
  • Assisting in updating the current asset inventory
Educational Background: 
The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Applicants should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and Outlook are essential.
  • A strong interest in human rights and relevant coursework is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity using Windows, MacOS, and Linux is preferred.
