The Europe and Central Asia (ECA) Division at Human Rights Watch (HRW) is currently seeking an undergraduate or graduate student intern in the New York office for fall 2019. Ideally, the intern will be available beginning September 2019 until mid-December 2019. The internship will focus on human rights abuses in the ECA region, particularly in Central Asia, Russia, and within the European Union.

Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements. 

Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conducting desk research;
  • Using available resources to conduct such research, including reviewing media, policy papers and academic reports;
  • Monitoring legislation and policies related to human rights;
  • Understanding the historical context and the complexities of ECA region;
  • Gaining a strong understanding of the work of the ECA Division;
  • Presenting information in a compelling manner;
  • Writing summaries and protocols; and
  • Contributing to some Russian-English translations.
  • Direct exposure to the workings of a large, international human rights organization;
  • Induction training on the internal working of HRW;
  • Access to HRW materials and publications;
  • Attending select in-house events such as a speaker series events, and other internal events, particularly for interns;
  • Attending internal staff meetings and outside meetings and events related to human rights field, if applicable;
  • Academic credit (students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements).
Educational Background: 
Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship term is required;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong interest in human rights in the European Union, Central Asia, and Russia is highly desirable;
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues is desirable;
  • Ability to read and write in English and Russian is essential;
  • Relevant coursework and previous experience working in the area of human rights or on countries in the region is desirable; and
  • Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications) and experience completing social science research is essential.
