New York, NY, USA
Internship

The Digital Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is currently seeking a graduate student and/or undergraduate student with experience and an interest in communications, digital storytelling on websites, social media and other digital platforms, as well as web technology to intern in its New York office. Ideally, the student would be available to intern for the spring 2019 semester beginning in January 2019 for a three-month period.

The internship is unpaid.  Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • The student will intern closely with the Senior Web Communications Manager and Web Producer and will learn how to: create digital communications products for the website, www.hrw.org; analyze database content; develop a weekly newsletter; and brainstorm other ways to improve the digital presentation of our information.
  • Other projects may be assigned as they arise and match the applicant's interests and abilities.
Educational Background:
Interns must be enrolled students for the duration of the internship.
Skills/Experience:
  • Fluency in a Windows environment is required.
  • Candidates with HTML coding skills, Photoshop skills, and familiarity with Drupal or another content management system is highly desirable.
  • Candidates should have strong analytical skills and should be comfortable using web-based technologies, as well as social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc).
  • Knowledge of a second language is a plus, but not required.
