New York, NY, USA
Internship

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a student to intern with the New York Committee team in the New York office. Ideally, the candidate will be available from September 2019 until December 2019 (dates and times are flexible).

This internship is best suited for students interested in learning the ins and outs of fundraising administration and events coordination in a dynamic, hands-on, and engaging large human rights organization.  The New York Committee team strives to prepare the selected candidate for a career in fundraising and non-profit work through fulfilling and stimulating intern projects.

Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, and/or special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Areas of Responsibility:

The internship will focus on:

  • Event planning for New York outreach events including the 2019 New York Annual Dinner;
  • Writing acknowledgment letters and other donor correspondence;
  • Conducting desk research for development and outreach projects;
  • Conducting prospect research;
  • Using and maintaining the Raiser’s Edge database; and
  • Updating the Committee Facebook page with relevant impact updates.

Interns will gain knowledge of the organization's priority human rights issues and build skills in research and fundraising.  Interns will have opportunities to attend planning and department meetings with staff and to take full advantage of in-house trainings and briefings.  This internship will provide training in Raiser’s Edge, one of the most utilized CRM systems within non-profit fundraising.

Educational Background:
The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term.
Skills/Experience:
  • Applicants should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.
  • Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential.
  • Database experience and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or other databases are desirable.
  • A strong interest in human rights and relevant coursework is highly desirable.
