New York, NY, USA
Internship

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a student intern for the Foundations Relations team in the New York office for the fall 2018 semester. Ideally, the candidate will be available beginning in August 2018.

Internships are unpaid.  Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • The internship will focus on contributing to foundations relations at-large, which includes reviewing and proof-reading grant reports and proposals; drafting letters to major donors; conducting research to identify prospective donors; and updating donor information on the Raiser’s Edge database. The intern will contribute to the Development and Outreach department’s philanthropic knowledge base with the guidance and mentorship of grant writers and frontline fundraisers.
  •  The student will gain valuable experience interning for an international non-profit organization, as well as a strong understanding of HRW’s priority human rights issues. The intern may attend meetings and lectures pertaining to our work and will have access to all our published reports and materials. The intern will also gain familiarity with the inner workings of a large development department and be trained to use Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge.
Skills/Experience:
  • The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term.
  •  Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable with a strong interest in human rights.
  • Strong writing and editing skills are preferred. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office; Internet applications) are required.
