POSITION SUMMARY

The Civic Affairs Summer Intern position has been created to assist the department in carrying out a variety of philanthropic and public policy initiatives. The summer intern will support the team's efforts by providing strong quantitative skills to review and analyze nonprofit financial data and the implications of potential public policy activities at the federal, state and local level. A keen interest in public sector finance, nonprofit organizations and public policy are all highly desirable for the role. The position is a 10-week, full-time role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  • Analyze nonprofit financial statements and provide coherent summary results to team members.
  • Create financial projections for various outcomes depending on future policy decisions.
  • Synthesize findings and results into well-written memos and briefing documents.
  • Perform research on current public policy events; prepare summary documents as needed.
  • Keep track of public policy events occurring at the federal, state and local level, especially those relating to budgetary decisions and activities.
  • Attend meetings with team members as needed.
  • Be comfortable performing independent project work (which will be a large part of the position's function and assignments).
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education
 

  • The summer intern should be a rising junior or senior at the undergraduate level or beginning the first year of graduate school.
  • Strong educational background in economics, finance or public policy
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Interest in the intersection of public policy and philanthropy
  • High level of maturity and discretion in dealing with sensitive information
  • Enthusiasm for learning new concepts and creating high-quality work
  • Good judgment and high degree of professionalism when interacting with others
  • Comfort with working on projects independently and reporting back to the team on a regular basis



Experience
 

  • Intern must have completed at least two years of undergraduate schooling.
  • Educational background in economics, finance or public policy.
  • Strong computer skills for analyzing data.
  • Prior internship work in a public policy, financial services or grant-making philanthropic organization helpful but not required.


Related Skills & Other Requirements

The summer internship will be performed primarily remotely. Work and collaboration with team members will take place via email, Zoom and other virtual meeting applications and phone conversations. The summer intern must have internet access throughout the duration of the internship.
