Associate Editor, Audubon Magazine

This job is no longer available

New York, NY, USA
Full-time

The Associate Editor is a full-time journalism position working within Audubon’s editorial department. This position involves writing, commissioning, and editing content for Audubon.org and Audubon magazine, a publication that covers a broad range of stories through the lens of birds, the issues that affect them, and the people who care about them. The Associate Editor will split their time working on our print and digital products.

We are a small team doing big things, and as finalists in the National Magazine Awards each year since 2015, we are recognized for it. Working for a century-old magazine that is also driven to innovate and reach new audiences, the Associate Editor will have the opportunity to pitch quirky profiles and ambitious features, break news, and push the boundary on our multimedia work—we are looking for a motivated, versatile team member who will bring their own skills, background, and interests to the role. If that’s you, please include a cover letter with linked clips when applying to this position.

Audubon believes that building a diverse team will enable us to more effectively fulfill our mission, and we encourage people of all backgrounds to apply.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • Regularly pitch, write, and edit stories ranging from news to explainers to narratives.
  • Plan and edit our front-of-the book Field Notes section for each quarterly magazine issue and contribute to other magazine departments.
  • Manage the process of translating Audubon magazine’s print stories to an effective online execution.
  • Collaborate with Audubon’s art team to produce stories that are highly visual and, where appropriate, leverage multimedia, data journalism, and other journalistic tools.
  • Assist in the editorial team’s goal of continuing to expand and diversify its freelance contributor pool by seeking out talented new voices.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in writing, journalism, English or a related field, or in a science or environmental field with journalism experience.
Skills/Experience:
  • Two to four years of journalism experience (this may include post-college internships or fellowships). Experience working on a print magazine is preferred.
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills and an ability to home in on smart, sharp story angles.
  • Prior editing experience is strongly preferred, but promising candidates with a desire to learn will also be considered.
  • Experience with at least one (or more) of the following beats: environment, environmental justice, social justice, climate change, science, conservation, or wildlife. Familiarity with birds is not a requirement, but you should be enthusiastic about learning.
  • Ability to juggle and meet multiple deadlines; communicate with your colleagues; and easily pivot between individual and collaborative projects.
  • Tech-savviness, including proficiency with a CMS.
  • Video/audio writing experience a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus.
