The Americas Division of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student intern for the fall 2018 semester in the New York or Washington, D.C. office. Ideally, the intern will be available beginning in September 2018.

This internship is unpaid.  Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights.  Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The intern will learn and be exposed to:

  • Conducting desk research;
  • Monitoring current events in Latin America;
  • Identifying and understanding key issues in the Latin American region; and
  • Drafting documents. 
Educational Background: 
Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship term is required;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Students in law school or other highly relevant graduate programs, preferably from professional schools are encouraged to apply;
  • Journalism experience in Latin America and familiarity with the region are desirable;
  • Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable candidates with a commitment to public service and a strong interest in international human rights especially in the Latin American region are desirable;
  • Fluency or high level of proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese is required; and
  • Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required.
