Communications Intern

This job is no longer available

New York, NY, United States
Internship

The Communications division at Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is currently seeking an undergraduate student with experience and interest in media and communications to intern in the New York office for the Winter / Spring 2018 semester. The student will intern closely with staff and learn how to monitor coverage of HRW in English and foreign-language media.

The internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Areas of Responsibility:

The internship will primarily involve:

  • Media Monitoring: The intern will track media hits for key reports and products in traditional, online, and social media sources.
  • Research: Desk research will focus on expanding and maintaining lists of journalists reporting on human rights issues. The intern will learn how to use media monitoring software to track and archive broadcast media appearances by HRW staff. Prior familiarity with this software is not required.
  • Social Media: The intern will research and post HRW materials in an effective and timely fashion.

Other projects related to research, translations, HRW’s online presence, and media outreach can be assigned as the opportunity arises.

Skills/Experience:
  • The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship. Students working towards an undergraduate degree in a relevant field, such as political science, communications, or journalism, are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights, news media, and social media. Applicants should demonstrate precise attention to detail, the ability to follow instructions, a positive attitude, a proactive approach, and good judgement. A thorough command of internet research tools is essential. Excellent verbal and written command of English is required. Proficiency in other foreign languages is a plus.
  • Applicants who are offered an internship, but who are not US permanent residents, US citizens, or in possession of a valid student visa, must apply for a J-1 visa through a sponsoring organization. This process can take several weeks and applicants will have to incur their own costs.
  • Due to the large number of applications, only short-listed candidates will be contacted further.
