Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is seeking highly qualified interns to join its Crisis & Tactical Response team, this fall (August-December).

The Crisis & Tactical Response team is responsible for making sure AIUSA responds effectively to crises at home and around the world as they emerge, with a particular focus on refugees. Building awareness of crisis response, managing crisis campaigns, and developing and executing rapid response on refugee work are all part of this role. Substantively, the work will focus on refugee resettlement and the Muslim Ban.

Areas of Responsibility: 

This internship provides an opportunity for a stellar candidate to have ownership of several projects and develop key materials for a multi-platform campaign with international, regional and national objectives. While it will include some organizational service work, such as meetings, filings, and other necessary office work, the internship provides opportunities to gain experience in:

  • Developing materials to be used in campaigning activities, advocacy discussions, and public education on the refugees and asylum seekers, including in AI publications, briefing materials for Congress and Executive Branch agencies, and on the webpage.
  • Developing substantive policy knowledge based in refugee law, international human rights law, US asylum law, foreign asylum law, and human rights violations targeted at people because of their identity.
  • Analyzing policy trends and identifying emerging areas of relevant global and national law and government policy.
  • Tracking the progress of legislation in the United States Congress and State legislatures and identifying key legislative opportunities.
  • Strategic campaign building and goal setting.
Skills/Experience: 

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Experience in strategic campaigning and advocacy
  • Experience in or knowledge of US asylum law, refugee law, and/or the resettlement process
  • Superior writing and analytical skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once
  • Ability to work well and easily on a fast-moving team
  • Strong initiative, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • A commitment to human rights and social justice
Additional Information: 

While a full-time internship of 35 hours per week is preferred, a part-time internship of 20 hours a week at minimum will be considered in exceptional circumstances.
