Reporting to the Audubon Mississippi Coastal Bird Stewardship Program Biologist, the Field Associate will be tasked with managing day-to-day operations going on in the field. They will work with the program staff to ensure implementation of conservation objectives align with the National Audubon Society strategic priority programs and goals. They will assist the Biologist with implementing and managing biological monitoring, research efforts, conservation projects, as needed.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Science Coordination:

  • Manage, lead, and oversee field operations, including but not limited to staff-led surveys and breeding bird monitoring;
  • Oversee data entry, management, and quality control;
  • Liaise between biologist and biological technicians;
  • Oversee scheduling to include boat trips, volunteer coordinators, banding trips, etc;
  • Assist with grant reports, technical reports, and scientific manuscripts as necessary;
  • Initiate research projects as necessary to understand species outcomes and improve effectiveness of monitoring, stewardship, and habitat management;
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and serviced.

Staff/Volunteer Leadership:

  • Lead recruiting, training, mentoring, and managing of field technicians, interns, and other staff as assigned; lead recruitment of USM volunteer interns.
  • Notify Biologist and Program Manager of equipment, safety, and personnel problems, and cooperates in conflict resolution;
  • Provide feedback and recommendations on additional training for staff or volunteers;
  • Manage scheduling of field work, including staff schedules, arrangements for visiting restricted access sites for monitoring, and scheduling activities for volunteers and interns;
  • Support Audubon Chapters and other volunteer groups in data gathering.
  • Support Stewardship Manager with outreach.

Program Development:

  • Work with program staff to develop and implement strategic goals and plans for the program;
  • Support development activities including solicitation of gifts and prospect development. Specific activities may include, but are not limited to, leading bird walks and giving presentations to existing and prospective donors, chapters, and community groups;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelors degree required, advanced degree in Ornithology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a related field preferred. Experience in lieu of education will also be considered;
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3+ years’ experience and demonstrated success in avian monitoring including bird identification by sight and sound and at least 1 year managing people and/or teams;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences; scientific writing skills required;
  • Strong organizational and relationship building skills; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to lead and work as part of a team;
  • Demonstrated success in managing volunteers;
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with key stakeholders, such as community and agency personnel;
  • Reliable, self-motivated and able to work comfortably in a dynamic, non-structured environment;
  • Willingness and flexibility to work nonstandard hours (early mornings, evenings, etc) and weekends as the job demands;
  • Specific experience identifying and monitoring coastal shorebirds, wading birds, gulls and terns;
  • nowledge of Gulf Coast conservation issues;
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult terrain while maintaining a positive attitude, with or without accommodation;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of bird monitoring protocols and methods for recording, assessment, and reporting of monitoring data, including the use of electronic reporting portals (eBird);
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Must have valid Driver’s License, access to personal vehicle, and ability to responsibly drive company vehicles;
  • Ability to drive a boat a plus;
