Job Description: Development Director
Reports to President/CEO:
Standard Working Hours: 5 days/week plus additional hours as necessary
The Development Director is part of The Blues Foundation’s management team. The Development Director is responsible for increasing membership, soliciting revenue, developing partnerships, and growing unrestricted support in order to meet targets, increase year-round operational capacity, and further The Blues Foundation’s charitable mission.
- Oversee all aspects of membership development to include both retention and growth
- Develop donor base to meet annual fundraising goals
- Create sponsorship opportunities and solicit business sponsorships for The Blues Foundation and its programs and events
- Manage all barter and trade agreements
- Seek new grants while managing existing grant requirements and reapplication for annual grants
- Manage systems and processes for quality data entry, gift acknowledgements, and reconciliation of financials in a timely manner
- Lead in the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of prospective and existing funders including corporate sponsors, foundations, major donors, grant makers, and Blues Foundation supporters.
- Oversee donation tracking for General Operations, The HART Fund, Generation Blues, and The Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame Museum
- Manage and generate strategic lists, reports, and metrics for the purpose of direct mail campaigns; event solicitations; donor and supporter communications; volunteer management; special events
- Identify grant opportunities and oversee all grant writing and follow-up reporting
- Develop Endowment and Legacy Giving plans and manage their growth and success
- Meet annual agreed upon fundraising goals
- Directly supervise the Membership Coordinator to ensure highest level of customer service possible
- Create strategies to recruit and retain members in order to grow organization’s membership numbers
- Assure that Blues Foundation members are receiving appropriate assistance with all member-based needs
- Develop strategies to build Blues Foundation donor base from existing and future membership
Additional Responsibilities
- Plan fundraising auctions for International Blues Challenge, Blues Music Awards, and Annual Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise
- Organize special donor acknowledgement events during the International Blues Challenge and Blues Music Awards
- Work with Marketing and Communications staff to develop and produce donor and supporter communications and campaigns, stewardship initiatives, and other related collateral materials, including the website and digital media
- Participate as part of the team in all activities related to the planning and execution of The International Blues Challenge and Blues Music Awards week, as needed.
- Ability to travel both nationally and internationally as opportunities dictate
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong technological skills to include customer relationship management software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Three to five years’ experience in supervising others
- Independent work ethic and strong time management and organizational skills
