AARP Wisconsin will be involved in major initiatives on both the state and federal levels. Federal Activities involve preserving and strengthening Health Care Access, Social Security and Medicare. State initiatives include caregiving legislation, health care access / policy, retirement savings and other issues affecting the health, safety and economic security of older Wisconsinites. We therefore seek an intern, whose background and interest are in government, legislative process, political science or issues of aging. The anticipated duration of this internship is May, 2019 through December, 2019.
Work in this position will provide the intern with experience influencing public opinion, public speaking opportunities, exposure to grass roots advocacy campaigns and policy work.
- Work with the ASD for Federal Advocacy on AARP WI’s educational campaign concerning Financial Security and Health Care Access.
- Work with the ASD for State Advocacy on AARP’s WI’s educational campaign on Caregiving.
- Coordinate volunteer attendance at public hearings, legislative events and congressional visits.
- Prepare volunteers to testify by preparing testimony and coaching those giving testimony.
- Write materials such as handouts, email alerts, training material and other communication to volunteer advocates, the media and coalition partners.
- Prepare bill analysis, recommend legislative strategy, and draft legislative alerts.
- Collaborate in the design and execution of an AARP WI advocacy presence on Facebook, twitter and other social media.
- AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.
- This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
