Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Student with work with ACS Kentucky State Health Systems Manager for 18 hours per week, according to the practicum guidelines and receive at minimum one hour of supervision per week
  • Student will shadow and participate in various learning opportunities that are in line with the work of the cancer control department in Kentucky and specifically State Health Systems Manager.  
  • Student will gain a deep knowledge of the tools and resources available within the American Cancer Society and Kentucky specific resources from partner agencies.  Student will be expected to end their practicum year able to speak to our services with accuracy and confidence.
  • Student will support ongoing work in Kentucky and the society though contribution on personal knowledge, experience, research and information gathering. This may include development of tools and resources to share with partners both internal and external.
  •  Student will be assigned 2-3 original projects, per semester, to support the Society’s mission on a more in-depth level.  These projects will be developed with the student based on the Society’s priorities (ie. HPV vaccination, Colon Cancer Screening, Breast Health Equity, Access to Care etc), the focus of State Health Systems (ie. Kentucky Cancer Consortium, Department for Public Health, Department of Medicaid, Managed Care Plans etc) and the student’s specific background, strength and interests.  These projects may include, but are not limited to; supporting the state’s colon cancer screening program through a new November “Know your family history” state campaign.  Support growth of HPV campaign through organizing HPV summit, meetings or outreach.  Enhancing the work of partner organizations in Palliative Care work. Partnering with the cancer consortium to research and develop tools designed for educating people with disabilities and their caregivers to get screened for cancer.  All of these projects are beyond the scope of the current portfolio of work provided by the current State Health Systems Manager in Kentucky and will enhance the student’s skills and the contribution of ACS in Kentucky through innovative channels.
  • Student will use the Society’s identified evidence based interventions and guidelines to guide their work. The focus of the student’s work will be to develop measurable and meaningful outcomes to reduce the burden of cancer in Kentucky.
Educational Background: 
Student must be a Master’s level social work student in good standing.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Student must be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with internal and external partners
  • Student must be able to adhere and promote the American Cancer Society’s mission, culture and guidelines.
  • Student will work within the framework of the Society, learning our structure and contribute to the mission in a meaningful way

All Interns Must meet the following requirements:

  • Full-time student, If you are an undergraduate student you  have completed your freshman year of college;
  • Have a minimum of a B average (cumulative 3.0 on 4.0 scale);
  • Plan to continue their education in the following term/semester
    • Note: an internship assignment may coincide with the student’s last term/trimester, but student must disengage upon graduation.
