Native Plants for Birds Intern

This position will assist with the management of the native plant nursery located at the Audubon Center at Debs Park in Los Angeles, bird walks in the surrounding Los Angeles community, and habitat restoration at Rio de Los Angeles State Park.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist with native plant nursery management, habitat restoration, and bird walks as assigned.
  • The intern will assist with regular nursery and restoration site maintenance such as irrigation, weeding, and seed collection.
  • The intern will also assist with plant propagation, creating soil mixes, transplanting, and assist with any special projects as needed.
  • Duties will may also include leading bird walks.
Skills/Experience: 

Interns should have an interest in biology, horticulture, environmental studies, agriculture, or related field, but all other fields will also be accepted. This position is designed specifically as a first-job position therefore there will be ongoing training and orientation throughout the internship experience. Overall all interns are only required to have a positive attitude and willingness to participate.

This internship is part-time, 10 hours per week primarily at the Audubon Center at Debs Park and Rio de Los Angeles State Park. There is an eight-week commitment. This is a paid internship and compensation includes work-place training relating to native plant propagation, invasive plant removal, plant and bird identification, and continuing education opportunities.

Compensation/Benefits: 

The propagation of native plants will provide the necessary plant stock to support vegetation and restoration projects within Debs Park, along the Los Angeles River, and other areas in Northeast Los Angeles. The intern will provide valuable support to vegetation management goals that will directly affect natural resource management within the park now and in the future. It will also provide nursery experience, biological/restoration science education, personal enrichment and teamwork rewards.
