Develop your skills while working for the largest social mission organization in the country.  As a student Intern with the Nebraska State Office of AARP, you will have the opportunity to see the real world of community outreach, empowering volunteers to be leaders and working collectively as a team to advance the mission of AARP. This is a paid internship with a target start date of January, 2020 and end date up to December, 2020.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work with AARP Nebraska staff in supporting state plan activities for community presence, volunteer efforts, state and federal legislative issues, community awareness and the AARP Fraud Watch Network.
  • Assist with planning, scheduling, organizing and attending community outreach and advocacy events as well as coordinating speaking engagements for AARP Fraud Watch Network volunteers.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge and compile information on AARP priority issues.
  • Assist volunteers with planning and logistics as needed and track their results.
  • Attend meetings, help prepare correspondence as well as assist in the coordination of volunteer outreach programs.
  • Provide assistance in coordinating, scheduling, and planning training opportunities for volunteers.
  • Provide support to Nebraska Caregiving Coalition by taking minutes and arranging events as needed.
  • Work closely with AARP staff and volunteers in preparing bags and packets of information for events.
  • Prepare biweekly newsletter for AARP volunteers; requesting articles from staff and drafting articles.
  • Assist with state office communications via social media and the web. Draft blogs for the web pages and posts for Facebook and Twitter.
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Prospective intern must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post doctorate students.
Skills/Experience: 

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers.  This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.

Additional requirements:

  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Able to work business hours, part-time 15-25 hours weekly. 
  • Experience using social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and online search tools,
  • Able to multi-task and work independently, as well as collaboratively.
  • Able to work well with volunteers and diverse populations.
  • Awareness of online practices that affect issues such as: privacy, confidentiality, liability, standards, ethics, safety, human rights, etc.
  • Commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
