Associate Director, SCAN Finance & Operations

The Associate Director, Finance and Operations will support financial and operational matters for Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), a 501(c)(4) organization charged with implementing Save the Children’s high-priority policy action campaigns.  The Associate Director is responsible for award management, budget management, revenue reconciliation, annual 990 preparation, accounting processes, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, providing audit support, and submitting state fundraising reports. This person will serve as the point of contact for all financial and operational guidance. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Contribute to the creation of strategy for the agency
  • Exercise independent judgment and discretion on significant matters
  • After review by their senior management, objectives are implemented independently to determine accomplishment, key milestones and overall success
  • Only broad-based policy and practices exist. Incumbent must determine the "what" and "why" based on minimal guidance
  • Lead program design and innovation across US Programs key areas of focus: early childhood development, school-age literacy, early numeracy and social-emotional learning.
  • Contribute to US Program strategy development, as a member of the Program Leadership Team
  • Represent Save the Children Manage team of technical experts to ensure quality programs

Financial Reporting and Analysis (40%)

  • Conduct regular analysis of financial data
  • Prepare monthly financial performance reports including, but not limited to, budget vs. actual, forecast expenses, and trends
  • Provide financial and strategic guidance to SCAN leadership
  • Identify and address financial risks
  • Maintain revenue reconciliation file
  • Coordinate with fundraising teams to identify need and develop annual targets
  • Prepare annual 990 tax file in collaboration with tax accountants

Award Management (25%)

  • Review and approve donor budget proposals
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance with federal and established donor requirements
  • Conduct quarterly process monitoring assessments
  • Maintain comprehensive source of funds analysis
  • Set expectations for donor proposal process and timeline

Operations Support (15%)

  • Ensure state charitable solicitation registrations, renewals, and financial reports are accurate and submitted as required
  • Maintain donation tracker by state
  • Inform the Legal and Human Resources departments when state expansion is planned and ensure appropriate business licenses are on file

Policies and Procedures (10%)

  • Develop and implement financial policies and procedures
  • Perform evaluations to ensure compliance
  • Update SCAN policies as required and present to SCAN SMT for approval

Leadership (10%)

  • Develop annual goals and training plans for SCAN Finance
  • Provide ongoing guidance to employees for development and direction
  • Set performance standards for stakeholder support
  • Ensure new employees are oriented to finance policies and procedures
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 5-7 years' experience in area of expertise
  • Strong level of technical and/ or managerial knowledge, skills, and experience to lead a unit or team, or provide the technical advice, guidance and direction related to various size programs and grants
  • Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with Microsoft Excel and demonstrated ability to apply creative ideas for data compilations
  • A creative self-starter who has the ability to support multiple stakeholders by providing sound financial data and guidance
  • Ability to work with staff at various levels and to demonstrate the importance of upholding financial policies and procedures
  • Ability to prioritize, work well under pressure, and capably handle/juggle multiple tasks within tight deadlines
