We are a Metro 4 (BPM 2) United Way with an annual campaign of $2 million with grant revenue of $175.000. Our strategic plan directs us further into the community impact continuum, with a particular focus on collective work toward early childhood success and high school graduation. We currently invest in 20 strategic partners/coalitions and internal programs working toward common goals around Education, Financial Stability and Crisis Intervention. In addition to supporting 2-1-1 Mississippi, we play a vital role in supporting a very successful VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Plan, direct and administer functions of the finance team. Develop and implement strategies to strengthen internal controls and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of finance processes. Responsible for changes in methods of accounting and financial reporting.
  • Provide financial oversight for UWCA accounting. This includes preparation and/or review of accounting transactions, reconciliations with appropriate external data and sub-ledgers and reporting, as well as analysis of variances and fluctuations.
  • Supervise the annual financial statement audit and IRS Form 990s. Ensure preparation of all audit and Form 990 workpapers and reports. Prepare audit/990 workpapers, variance analysis and audit reports. Prepare/review internal and external reporting.
  • Supervise the donor services function including campaign accounts receivable, billings, collections, pledge and designation processing, designation payouts, donor correspondence and preparation of related internal and external reporting.
  • Develop and oversee processes and systems for accounting for non-traditional funding sources, fiscal agent relationships, etc. including compliance and reporting. This includes grants, UWCA initiatives, sponsorships, etc.
  • Perform corporate projects, such as, but not limited to:
    • Accounting and tax research
    • Updates on GAAP
    • Compliance with government regulations
    • Policies and procedures revisions/updates
    • Respond to vendor and UWCA team member requests/inquiries; provide supporting documentation as necessary

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise Assistant Controller
  • Establish goals and expectations for team member(s)
  • Provide team members timely, candid and constructive performance feedback.
  • Support team member development and provide challenging opportunities that enhance growth.
  • Actively manage conflict and resolve and elevate disagreements as appropriate.
  • Recognize and reward team members for accomplishments.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures

Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent.
Master’s degree in finance or accounting or CPA license preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Interacts with team members at all levels of the organization, public accounting and bank representatives, grantors, and other vendors
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, GAAS, and federal grant accounting.
  • Proficiency in basic Microsoft Word and intermediate Excel. 
  • Five or more years of experience in general accounting (eight or more years preferred).
  • Three or more years of management experience.
  • Public or non-profit accounting experience is preferred.
  • Proficient in GAAP And FASB guidance as applied to not-for-profit accounting
  • Ability to properly interpret financial transactions for production of accurate financial statements
  • Experience in annual budgeting and longer-term strategic planning
  • Ability to recognize and institute proper accounting controls for cash, general, and subsidiary ledgers,
  • Demonstrated skills in the development and supervision of staff
  • Comfort and proficiency with presentation skills both one-on-one and publicly
  • Fluent in the English language, both oral and written, including correct punctuation, spelling and grammatical usage
  • Proficient in the latest Microsoft Office Environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, vision and goals of United Way.
