Development & Outreach Intern

This job is no longer available

Geneva, Switzerland
Internship

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking interns for the Geneva office. Ideally, interns will be available for at least 3 months beginning in March 2018.

This internship is best suited for those individuals interested in gaining experience in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge and skills in conducting desk research, using databases, event planning, and fundraising. Interns will learn about the organization's priority human rights issues. In order to provide a valuable and well-rounded internship experience, interns will attend planning and department meetings with staff and may have the opportunity to take advantage of in-house trainings and briefings.

Internships are unpaid. However, interns may be reimbursed for some lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • The internship will primarily focus on planning HRW’s major fundraising and outreach events, drafting acknowledgment letters and other correspondence, coordinating donor communication, engaging donors, using databases, and conducting desk research for development and outreach projects. Interns will collaborate closely with staff to identify and create opportunities for donor involvement by informing existing and prospective supporters of our work.
Skills/Experience:
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both French and English are required. Computer skills are essential (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications).
  • Applicants should be strong team players and disciplined self-starters.
  • Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues.
