The CS plays a vital role in the mission of Habitat. They lead and educate construction staff, volunteer groups, and individuals in performing daily residential construction tasks. They work in partnership with all of Habitat’s key stakeholders including staff, board members, donors, volunteers, subcontractors, vendors, and local cities.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Construction Management

  • Responsible for all aspects of both on-site and off-site construction management including but not limited to: permits, planning, scheduling, supplier and product selection, subcontractor solicitation and selection, contract and change order management, infrastructure preparation, site prep and erosion control, inspections required throughout the build process and for certificate of occupancy, and coordination of staff resources on a daily basis.
  • Executes production goals established in partnership with the Executive Director to ensure success of affiliate’s strategic plan for completed housing units.
  • Sets project budget in partnership with the Executive Director; reviews, approves, tracks and reports all construction-related invoices and costs.
  • Coordinates project start and completion dates and ensures on-time project completions.
  • Responsible that all projects are completed on-time, on-budget, and quality standards are met.
  • Assures all erosion control and required state storm water management best practices for active, vacant lots and recycled properties.
  • Up to date on City Building and Development codes and ensures compliance with same.
  • Meets overall objectives and manages day-to-day job site operations.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of best practices, significant developments, and trends in the field of residential construction.
  • Responsible for other tasks as required by the Executive Director.

Program Support

  • Works with the Executive Director to create and support residential construction program metrics and requirements promoting a safe, positive, and productive environment for fellow staff, volunteers, donors and partner families.
  • Establish internal structure, procedures and processes needed to meet operations objectives.
  • Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to schedule, host and ensure positive experiences for groups and individuals volunteering on the job sites.
  • Clearly, politely, safely, and efficiently explains and demonstrates the use of approved tools and tasks to volunteers.
  • Maintain the job site: keeping the site clean, having necessary tools and materials available to complete tasks, keeping tool storage and warehouse areas supplied, organized and secure. This includes solicitation and management of trash and recycling removal, portable toilet services, and temporary storage containers when and as needed.
  • Ability to plan for the need and acquire supplies for the week’s construction tasks, including driving between suppliers and construction sites.
  • Build capacity of construction department to meet strategic production growth goals.

Safety Management

  • Competent Person Safety Trained certified (or able to be so within 6 months of hire).
  • Implements the affiliate’s construction Safety plan and Program by training employees and construction volunteers on safe practices and standards consistent with current OSHA regulations and HFHI policies.
  • Demonstrate and maintain required safety practices – ensure proper use of equipment and/or protective measures for volunteers or other construction trades/suppliers in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator.

  • Enhances the organization’s culture by reinforcing core values fostering a collaborative, positive, and safe work environment.
  • Sustains a collaborative environment to ensure positive, effective and efficient working relationships between affiliate staff, suppliers, contractors, partner families and volunteers.
  • Provides mentoring opportunities for construction volunteers and manages the daily training needs of volunteers to equip them to meet day’s program goals.
  • Monitors self-performance on a regular basis and creates and reviews annual performance and professional development metrics as agreed upon with the Executive Director.
  • Maintains professional, discrete communication and does not pass along information that may be considered confidential, private, and protected to either partner families, volunteers, donors, vendors or other staff.

Communication & Planning

  • Works with Executive Director to develop annual work plans and metrics for measurable construction program efficiencies.
  • Timely communication with the Executive Director and Volunteer Coordinator to monitor construction program activities and volunteer satisfaction.
  • Fully informs Executive Director in a timely, consistent manner of all construction related planning, administrative, and programmatic activities.
  • Communication with architects and engineers as needed to get clarification on design questions.
  • Facilitates volunteer trainings with diverse participants.

Financial Performance

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director: Establishes and monitors key budget metrics demonstrating ability to budget jobs and complete projects at or below budget.

Educational Background: 
Minimum High School diploma or equivalent required. A 2 year degree or a BA/BS in Construction or a related field is preferable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • MUST HAVE AT LEAST 3 YEARS Residential Construction experience, preferably 5-7 years.
  • MUST be a skilled multi-tasker, have project management experience and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • MUST use technology efficiently, including Microsoft Office; Project, Outlook, Word, and Excel. Advanced computer skills preferable. Ability to use android and/or apple smart devices.
  • Ability to sequence work and develop build schedules in Microsoft Project.
  • Skilled in communicating and teaching residential construction techniques to volunteers (who may or may not have construction-related skills) in a clear, friendly and professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate with and interface effectively with subcontractors and vendors.
  • Able to identify, evaluate, and solve problems and issues quickly; able to effectively manage conflict.
  • Exceptional communication skills with supervisors, staff, partner families and volunteers.
  • Significant residential construction supervisory and hands on experience is required w/ 3-7 years of direct on-site.

Ability to:

  • Work effectively in both office and construction site environments.
  • Sit at a desk or to stand on ones feet for extended periods of time.
  • Adequately traverse a residential construction job site maneuver typical site obstacles; climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying (minimum 35-50 lbs.) or other similar activities as required.
  • Ability to evaluate completed construction tasks/stages for correctness to pass inspection
Compensation/Benefits: 

Exempt status salary ranges from $45,000 - $50,000. Currently, benefits are not provided. The affiliate is working to incorporate benefits into compensation package in 2019.
