The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is the nation's leading cancer advocacy organization. Together with our charitable partner, the American Cancer Society, we work in Congress, state legislatures and local jurisdictions to support evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. Based in Washington, DC with offices throughout the country, ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority.

  • Develop a basic understanding of ACS, ACS CAN and its mission.
  • Developing an understanding of the state legislative process.
  • Assist in the recruitment of advocates in targeted area to build on our state policy work.
  • Develop written and spoken communication skills
Areas of Responsibility: 

Communications:

  • Develop 1-2 social media graphics focused on ‘tobacco 21’ policy
  • Develop 1-2 social media graphics focused on volunteer recruitment
  • Develop 4 emails to ACS CAN volunteers to take action
  • Draft and submit one letter to the editor on a policy issue of student’s choice

Legislative and Policy Process:

  • Shadow ACS employee at Minnesota State Capitol (week of April 1, April 8, April 22, April 29) 8 hours per day
  • Meet with state lawmakers
  • Understand how a bill becomes a law, the public policy process• Attend coalition meetings

Grassroots Organizing and Volunteer Recruitment:

  • Find one student organization on campus and request to speak to the group on: ACS, ACS CAN, and include one volunteer opportunity for students.
  • Attend an American Cancer Society Relay For Life Meeting and present on ACS CAN, policy work, and try and recruit new volunteers.
  • Connect with area ACS CAN volunteer lead to learn more about volunteer process, volunteer structure, and volunteer management.

Community Event Planning:

  • Work with ACS staff to learn how to develop plans to reach goals.
  • Attend the RFL of Central Minnesota and run the ACS CAN booth.
  • Attend RFL Committee meeting on April 1 and talk about ACS CAN and recruit ACS CAN members.
Educational Background: 
Full-time student, If you are an undergraduate student you  have completed your freshman year of college;
Skills/Experience: 
  • Have a minimum of a B average (cumulative 3.0 on 4.0 scale);
  • Plan to continue their education in the following term/semester
  • Note: an internship assignment may coincide with the student’s last term/trimester, but student must disengage upon graduation.
