Fire Effects Analyst

The Fire Effects Analyst will analyze fuel loading and fire effects data collected by the TNC North Carolina’s staff and partner and prepare reports on the findings for staff.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work with the TNC NC fire manager to compare fuel loading data from the SBR FLN fire effect monitoring dataset to fuel loads in existing fuel beds https://depts.washington.edu/nwfire/dps/. Prepare a report on a partial dataset to be presented at a workshop in May 15-17. Complete the fuel data set report by mid June.
  • Prepare Sandhills fire effects data collected 2016&17 for analysis, create a report to assess future direction of the effort. Assess how the data can be used in tools such as BEHAVE, FOFEM and Bluesky smoke modeling to improve prescriptions and goals in burn plans.
  • Compile fire records in GIS for reports.
  • Support creating site specific monitoring reports using SBR FLN monitoring data to managers as time permits.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Prepare existing data sets for analysis, conduct analysis and create reports.
  • Compare fire effects reported in data to model outputs from BEHAVE, FOFEM and BLUESKY.
  • Assemble shapefiles with burn units into to create fire reports.
  • Occasionally support ongoing fire effects monitoring efforts in the Sandhills and mountains.
  • Participate in controlled burns on both TNC and partner lands as a FFT2 or higher qualification.
  • May require physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult sometimes hazardous terrain.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience          
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Minimum GPA of 2.8 in an undergraduate program related to natural resources, environmental sciences, ecology, or a related field.
  • Experience in managing and analyzing date in excel, creating graphs
  • Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager.
  • Ability to learn software packages independently.                   
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, and driver’s license).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in managing and analyzing date in excel, creating graphs.
  • Experience collecting fuels data using Browns transects.
  • Experience with BEHAVE and FOFEM software.
  • Experience in ARC GIS to create maps and reports.
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or inclement weather.
  • Qualified as or able to meet qualifications for FFT2, including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fireline (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighter Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.
  • Must achieve arduous physical fitness standard to participate on controlled burns.
  • Experience using ArcGIS software for creating and editing shapefiles, and making maps.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience appreciated.
