Teach For America Chicago-Northwest Indiana seeks a Director, Leadership Coach (DLC) to play a critical role at the heart of Teach For America’s work on the 2nd Year Corps Member (2CM) Team. Because we believe teaching is an act of leadership, 2CM is all about maximizing the capacity of our corps members in order to make the greatest possible success of the region’s strategic priorities, particularly in the areas of culturally responsive teaching, diverse learning, and culture of achievement.    

As a member of the 2CM team, DLC’s are charged with developing a cohort of culturally competent and committed leaders who are clear on the impact they want to make on educational outcomes for kids in Chicago now and into the future.

To reach this vision, DLCs design and execute dynamic coaching experiences that enable our 2CMs to build on the foundations and impact from their first year corps member experience. Because we believe that our community is stronger as a collective, DLCs are charged with mobilizing cohorts of 2CMs to grow and learn from one another as a critical part of our corps member arc of experience. They regularly collaborate and problem solve with other team members and school partners. 

The Director, Leadership Coach will report to the Managing Director, Second Year Corps Leadership and will be a part of the Second Year Corps Member Team and broader Corps Member Leadership Team.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Coach and Ignite Corps Members to Lead Together (55%)

  • Quickly build rapport and credibility with and lead a cohort of second year corps members through designed group learning experiences.
  • Coach corps members to grow as teacher leaders for their current students and as they develop their leadership for their longer term aspirations as it relates to continuing to work toward educational equity. This will happen largely through small group and cohort-wide leadership development experiences, designed by the DLC.
  • Strategically identify and recruit 2CMs to make up 2CM Executive Board tasked with co-leading experiences and culture
  • Enter data into Program Tracker and use to inform decision making and planning
  • Manage corps members to outcomes for AmeriCorps compliance, university partner compliance and Teach Beyond 2 entry
  • Support 2CM’s in making the connection between their track development learning experiences and classroom outcomes.
  • Connect corps members to high-impact external opportunities (Alumni Teachers, University Partners, etc.) to improve their teaching 

 Program Design, Assessment, and Evaluation (25%)

  • Alongside fellow Program staff members and corps members, design and execute the Member Arc of Experience, including milestones for corps member development culture and connectivity, including CMs of Color and LGBTQ corps member experiences, and leadership programming (Values Based Leadership Development, CM Leadership Summits, etc.)  
  • Specialize in providing unique support to corps members in one of the following areas: culturally responsive teaching, culture of achievement, diverse learning.
  • Support the planning of our 2019 Summer Training program which is our pre-service training for all new corps members. Director, Leadership Coaches will be expected to:
  • Help design programming and sessions under the direction of the MD, Summer Training.
  • Engage in training through the spring in preparation for leading sessions in the summer
  • Over the seven weeks of Summer Training, Director Leadership Coaches will be expected to strategically support execution directly at Summer Training

 Stewarding External Relationships (5%)

  • Engage school leaders in dialogue around our theory of teacher development and seek points of alignment to streamline corps member experience and support.
  • Function as TFA liaison to some external relationships in managing corps member retention and hiring

Team Collaboration and Coordination (5%)   

  • Prepare for and lead check ins with your manager around progress toward your goals and your ongoing development
  • Prepare for and participate in Program and 2CM Team Meetings.
  • Collaborate with and support your Program Team colleagues’ work and development  
  • Weigh in on the design and execution of our corps member arc of learning.

Collective Responsibility Regional Projects (10%)

  • Fulfill foundational responsibilities that allow our region to do our work, make decisions, grow as professionals, and strengthen our team culture, including but not limited to attending regional meetings, operating with our Core Values and commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness, completing our performance management cycle, and upholding our data management, office operations, and fiscal responsibilities
  • Make a direct impact on the organizational mission of enlisting, developing and mobilizing leaders to strengthen the movement for educational equity by participating in (but not limited to) selection of new corps members (6-10 days total plus preparation and close out time), matriculation of new corps member (up to six windows across the year), and the induction of new corps members to our region.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s Degree preferred but not required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 4-7+ years of previous professional experience with a minimum of three years of highly effective teaching (preferably some experience working with diverse learning) and leadership development experience.
  • Knowledge of Culturally Responsive Teaching practices, including creating an inclusive and engaged classroom culture, and demonstrated ability to coach teacher-coaches in CRT.
  • Ability to sort through a variety of competing priorities, consider multiple perspectives, make timely decisions and demonstrate good judgment to support the long-term leadership development of second year teachers in TFA.
  • Ability to develop and cultivate strong relationships quickly with second year teachers and an ability to support those teachers in connecting with one another.
  • Ability to support second year teachers in working to build their own cultural competence and build an inclusive community amongst this group of teachers.
  • Able to navigate conflict, disagreement, and resolve differences in challenging situations involving both TFA and non-TFA stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate data into actionable solutions to support teacher learning.  
  • Ability to look at the state of affairs and vision for our second year teacher program and determine strategies to best support the teachers.

 Work Demands

  • Occasional evenings and weekends are required
  • Ability to travel throughout the Chicago-Northwest Indiana area to attend classroom observations and in-person meetings with CMs and external partners.
  • Limited overnight travel required to attend Teach For America conferences (expenses paid for by Teach For America)
