The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a student intern for the spring 2019 semester in the Chicago office. Ideally, the intern will be available from February to May 2019. This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will gain knowledge of the organization's priority human rights issues and will build skills in fundraising, event planning and information tracking.
Internships are unpaid. However, students may be able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by HRW staff, and interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.
Interns will be involved with general departmental activities including, but not limited to, coordinating visits and events with top Human Rights Watch researchers, drafting correspondence, participating in advocacy efforts, using databases, and participating in other outreach initiatives.
- Applicants should be well-organized, attentive to detail, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in human rights.
- Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, internet applications) are required.
- Experience with graphic and web design, event planning, and using databases is a plus.
