Context: The Sierra Club’s Our Wild America Campaign expands on the Sierra Club’s long legacy of protecting public lands and special places- building powerful movements to protect land, waters, wildlife, climate, and communities in the face of threats from fossil fuel extraction and other destructive industries. We also work to advance equitable access to the outdoors, building lifelong connections between people and nature, and inspiring a new generation of activists. We achieve this vision through three programs: Lands, Water, Wildlife; Beyond Dirty Fuels; and Sierra Club Outdoors, each of which are rooted in our organizational commitment to improving both our natural and human environment through a lense of Equity, Inclusion and Justice. 

This position is part of the Lands, Water, Wildlife campaign, which works to build a national movement to protect our public lands, waters and wildlife.  The Senior Campaign Representative (California) acts as the lead campaign staff member in the state, responsible for planning and implementing the strategies and activities of the Lands,Water,Wildlife campaign in California.

Scope: The Senior Campaign Representative (California) is responsible for the planning, coordination, and implementation, as well as securing financial resources for, the Lands,Water,Wildlife campaign in California. Collaborates with and coordinates the campaign’s activities with the Sierra Club chapter volunteers, partner organizations, national capacities and appropriate staffing resources. Under the direction of the Associate Director – Lands, Water, Wildlife develops funding proposals, campaign strategies, priorities and benchmarks. The Senior Campaign Representative implements such strategies by coordinating across capacity units such as Organizing, Legal, Federal Policy, Communications, Outdoor Activities, and Digital strategies. Position provides leadership, promotes participation, and reports on campaign effectiveness to assigned National staff. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public. The work in California is focused on building a diverse movement of people throughout the state to defend our wild places and wildlife, building deep partnerships with grassroots and frontline partner organizations, advancing outdoor access for all and long-term protections for special places and wildlife species.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Acts as the lead staff member responsible for planning and implementation of the Our Wild America campaign’s Lands, Water, Wildlife program in California. Develops a strategic campaign plan, goals, and objectives for the state. Facilitates close coordination between Sierra Club capacities to achieve the desired outcomes of the program in California – including the Environmental Law Program, Chapters (13 in California), Federal Policy, Communications, Organizing, and Digital Strategies, as well as collaborates with other Our Wild America Programs (Beyond Dirty Fuels and Sierra Club Outdoors) and other Sierra Club entities.
  • Closely coordinates with the Advancement Department to achieve associated Lands,Water,Wildlife campaign- California campaign fundraising targets, including donor cultivation, and proposal writing.
  • Develops and advances Sierra Club policy positions related to state and federal resource management plans and processes. Ensures the Sierra Club is regarded as a significant leader by the media, key decision makers and donors. Ensures that such policies are accurately advanced by volunteers and organizing, lobbying and legal staff in various decision making fora.
  • Develops and advances regional strategies to block harmful threats to the region’s public lands, waters and wildlife, such as logging, mining, fossil fuel extraction and other inappropriate development, the sell-off of public lands, and more – and coordinates with the national Our Wild America Campaign to push back against federal threats to our lands, water and wildlife and bedrock environmental laws.
  • Collaborates with Our Wild America Campaign leadership and the Sierra Club’s 13 Chapters in California to identify new threats and opportunities for the Sierra Club to engage on in the state. Provides professional expertise and training to support staff and volunteers.
  • Builds strong relationships with partner organizations at the national, state, and local level –with a focus on supporting the leadership of communities most impacted by environmental threats, and building a diverse, broad-based movement to defend and protect our public lands, waters and wildlife.  
  • Coordinates media outreach activities related to the campaign/program. Serves as Sierra Club’s Our Wild America Campaign spokesperson to media outlets regarding California issues and promotes volunteer and frontline partner media exposure.
  • Writes, edits, and reviews educational, advocacy and fundraising materials.
  • Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field; or the equivalent combination of knowledge, skills and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3- 5-plus years' experience in a comparable position which includes substantial experience planning and managing grassroots campaigns, including strategy, facilitation, grassroots organizing, lobbying, media, partnership development, working with volunteers, and work with political leaders. Experience with managing a program budget desirable.
  • Strong knowledge within the environmental and social justice field. Knowledge and background experience specific to California lands, water and wildlife highly desirable.
  • Commitment to advancing equity, inclusion and justice throughout all of our work. 
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability. Strong personal organization and prioritization skills. Strong listening skills with the ability to help resolve conflict. Willingness to give and receive constructive feedback – and commitment to a culture of flexibility, learning and growth.
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Extensive travel required.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
