To supervise and manage all work done and all materials used at construction sites in a manner that ensures safe and efficient building practices. To honor and implement the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Safety

  • In conjunction with other Site Supervisors, maintain a current list of safety rules and practices to be followed on HFHCFC construction sites. A summary of key safety points must be posted at all times on the construction sites.
  • Ensure that all volunteers and HFHCFC staff understand these rules and practices before they enter construction sites.
  • Ensure that all volunteers and HFHCFC staff adhere to these rules whenever they are on site.
  • Teach the safe and correct way to use all tools and equipment.
  • Maintain an emergency plan in case of accidents.
  • Maintain construction sites in an orderly, safe manner. Work should not begin until this status is verified and maintained.
  • Supervision of volunteer labor
  • Ensure that volunteers have a safe, productive, fun building experience with HFHCFC regardless of their skill level.
  • For each task on site, establish work teams, teach volunteers how to do the task safely and efficiently, teach them how to use appropriate tools, and guide their work to ensure safety and quality.
  • Maintain a flow of tasks that will make good use of volunteers’ time, engaging them as soon as possible after they arrive on site and keeping them productively busy throughout the day.
  • Improve the technical and leadership skills of longer term volunteers by providing training and mentoring.
  • In a professional, respectful manner, remove any volunteer from the work area if he/she refuses to follow safety rules or mistreats other volunteers or staff.

Training

  • Responsible for consulting with Director of Construction and/or other Site Supervisors whenever a technical question or problem arises on site if there is uncertainty about the answer.
  • Collaborate with Director of Construction and other Site Supervisors in establishing a consensus about desired techniques for each construction task
  • Train core task leaders in these approved methods of construction (“training the trainers”) as well as communicate them to one-time volunteer groups.
  • Ensure that the training is interactive, hands-on development along with positive and constructive criticism. The purpose is to improve each volunteer’s skills, self-confidence, and support of HFH and its mission.
  • Materials and Tasks
  • Order and/or pick up materials necessary for construction tasks, coordinating with the Director of Construction.
  • Ensure all necessary materials and tools are available on building sites at the time they are needed.
  • Work with the Director of Construction and the Volunteer Services Manager to identify work plans on assigned sites to match groups of volunteers with upcoming tasks.

Construction Management

  • Support volunteers and donors who come to HFHCFC in order that they feel safe, productive and appreciated.
  • Support fellow members of the HFHCFC staff in order that all members of the team feel safe, productive, appreciated, and moving steadily toward fulfilling the mission.
  • Participate in regular planning meetings, as called by the Director of Construction
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in hands-on, multi-site residential construction.
  • Demonstrated success in training and leading less-skilled volunteer labor.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements for construction sites.
  • Demonstrated desire to support the mission of Habitat. Good interpersonal skills.
  • Have current CT driver’s license.
  • Maintain current certification in CPR and basic first aid
  • Prefer bilingual English/Spanish
