Disability Law Center (DLC), a private non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure autonomy, inclusion, equality, and access for people with disabilities in Massachusetts, has an opening for an investigator/advocate in our Boston office.   

DLC is seeking a detail-oriented investigator/advocate who is committed to the rights of people with disabilities who live in the community or in institutional settings; who possesses strong interpersonal skills to interview people with disabilities, providers and family members in a variety of settings; and, who is able to work with financial data to assure that people with disabilities are protected from financial exploitation.

The general responsibility of the investigator/advocate will be to conduct reviews of Representative Payees. Representative Payees receive and manage Social Security payments on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Duties will include: conducting site reviews and investigations; interviewing individuals; reviewing financial records; assessing incidents of potential misuse or financial exploitation; identifying possible health, safety or rights violations; and drafting reports and findings.

Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications include: the ability to master regulations and policy; strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written; and a commitment to economic and social justice. The successful candidate will be expected to execute projects with a high degree of independence, while working within DLC’s team-oriented atmosphere. This position includes regular travel throughout Massachusetts.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary range: $49,800 - $55,800

DLC is the Protection and Advocacy agency for Massachusetts. DLC is a private, non-profit organization responsible for providing protection and advocacy for the rights of Massachusetts residents with disabilities. DLC receives federal, state and private funding but is not part of the state or federal government. DLC has a current staff of 22 in two offices.

The mission of DLC is to provide legal advocacy on disability issues that promote the fundamental rights of all people with disabilities to participate fully and equally in the social and economic life of Massachusetts. Toward this end, DLC provides information, referral, technical assistance and representation regarding legal rights and services for people with disabilities; and legal services to eligible people and groups whose cases meet DLC’s priorities. DLC seeks to strike a balance between systemic advocacy and individual representation. In addition, it conducts trainings for community groups and other advocacy organizations.
