The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance in the Berlin Office. The Berlin office serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in Germany. This position is part-time at 32 hours a week (80% schedule) and reports to the Director of Development and Outreach based in Berlin. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will start in September 2019.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Providing administrative support to the Director of Development and Outreach and the team such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, preparing background materials, processing mail, responding to inquiries, and processing and tracking department expenses;
  • Assisting with the organization and coordination of logistics, including preparing materials and tracking RSVPs for events in Germany such as Committee meetings, outreach events, and annual dinners, and conducting follow-up as needed;
  • Maintaining the Raiser's Edge database by ensuring accurate and timely recordings of all campaigns, appeals, gifts, and contact information, generating financial reports, lists and queries, and updating information;
  • Tracking communication with Committee members, donors, and supporters;
  • Assisting with donor relations including gift acknowledgment letters;
  • Coordinating the development and distribution of content such as web content, newsletters, Facebook page, and e-mails;
  • Assisting with the administration of major gifts prospects and undertaking prospect research;
  • Assisting with editing and translating documents;
  • Assisting with the recruitment, training, and supervision of interns; and
  • Carrying out other duties as required.
Educational Background: 
A post-secondary degree (Bachelor’s or higher), or relevant vocational training (e.g. kaufmännische Ausbildung zur/zum Veranstaltungskauffrau/mann) is required.
Education or training specifically in project management, event organization, administration, logistics or fundraising is preferable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience or other project coordination related experience is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in German (CERF C2) and high intermediate English language skills (CEFR B2-C1) are essential.
  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  • Strong interest in international human rights is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences, including donors are required.
  • Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
  • Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in locations globally are required.
  • Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and donor databases, as well as knowledge of web management, are strongly desired.
