Application Deadline: August 20, 2018
The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an intern for its Beirut office. Ideally, the intern will be available part-time for one month beginning in mid-September 2018 through mid-October 2018. The intern will gain knowledge and skills in fundraising, using databases, event planning, and conducting desk research. This internship is best suited for those individuals interested in gaining experience in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. In order to provide a valuable and well-rounded internship experience, interns will attend planning and department meetings with staff and may have the opportunity to take advantage of in-house trainings and briefings.
Internships are unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
The intern will learn and primarily focus on:
- Event planning for the Voices for Justice Dinner in the fall 2018 and various outreach and cultivation events (i.e., film screenings and receptions);
- Preparing visits of HRW researchers and advocates;
- Creating donor profiles and using databases;
- Conducting desk research on funding possibilities in Beirut; and
- Other tasks and projects as they arise.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in both Arabic and English are required.
- Computer skills are essential (e.g., Microsoft Office, internet applications).
- Applicants should be well-organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, and reliable with a positive attitude and strong time management skills.
- Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues.
