The Disaster Risk Reduction and Response (DR3) Department at Habitat for Humanity International is seeking the support of 2 interns. These are unpaid internships, with Habitat assigning computer equipment and workstations in its HQ location. The expected duration of these internships are for a minimum of one year or two semesters. Students will be eligible for college credits.
Both interns will serve under the direction of the Director of Field Operations-DR3. Work will be primarily focused on Habitat’s international programs across a variety of contexts and environments.
Intern #1
Goal: Support compilation and publication of the Habitat’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Response Shelter Catalogue – 2nd edition
- Research and collect materials, evidence and other inputs from the past 5 years of Habitat’s disaster risk reduction and response interventions.
- Work with Habitat’s field staff (national organizations and Area Offices) in completing information and materials towards case studies and cut sheets (documents, project reports, photos, etc.).
- Write case studies and other informational materials using existing format from previous 1st edition of Habitat’s DR Shelter Catalogue.
- Work with Habitat’s Communications Department (InMotion) on compilation and editing of 2nd edition of the DR Shelter Catalogue.
- Perform other tasks as requested.
Intern #2
Goal: Support the publication of Pathways to Permanence book/report
- Research materials related to incremental housing approaches and evidence supportive of Habitat’s Pathways to Permanence strategy.
- Work with Habitat’s Communications Department (InMotion) in the creation of layout and graphic design for technical materials related to incremental site development and housing.
- Coordinate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for the completion of written sections towards publication.
- Work with Habitat’s Communications Department on styling, editing and proofreading of technical contents related to humanitarian response, risk reduction and incremental construction.
- Perform other tasks as requested.
Intern #1
- Majors: Engineering, Architecture or similar
- Grade Point Average: 3.0 or better
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a big plus
- Excellent writing skills.
- Knowledge of humanitarian response architecture, risk reduction concepts and international development work.
- Good interpersonal skills and intercultural relations.
- Experience with reporting and systematization of raw information.
- Some international experience with humanitarian-related work desired.
Intern #2
- Majors: International Relations, Global Affairs or similar
- Grade Point Average: 3.0 or better
- Language: Bilingual (Spanish/English) a big plus
- Knowledge of humanitarian response, housing and site development concepts.
- Excellent writing skills
- Experience with systematization of raw information.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Some international experience with humanitarian-related work desired.
Duration: Interns required 3- 5 days/week; 1 year or 2 semesters, with the option to stay on for longer.
