The Designer is responsible for developing and producing designed communications materials for The Nature Conservancy’s most generous donors and crafting highly visual materials in support of organizational conservation priorities. The position reports to the Senior Designer and is also responsible for supporting the Senior Designer in delivering communications support for Executive Leadership.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Designer is responsible for developing and producing designed and digital materials, and videos to engage, solicit and steward individual and institutional donors with the capacity to give at the $5 million+ level. Specifically, s/he will support the communications needs of the Principal Gifts Development Team and Executive Leadership, working closely with senior Development and Conservation staff and reporting to the Donor Communications Team.

The Designer helps create visual concepts and participates in development of internal communications strategies to advance the global conservation agenda. S/he supports the Senior Designer as needed regarding project management and team outreach and will also collaborate closely with the Donor Communications Officers. S/he works in close cooperation with any or all of the following: members of the Donor Communications and Stewardship Team, Principal Gifts and field fundraisers, Conservation program staff, Executive Team members, Marketing staff, Legal and Finance staff, individual donors and foundation program officers, contract writers and designers, vendors and others as needed. S/he provides advice, recommendations and training related to donor communications.

The Designer maintains up-to-date, expert knowledge of design tools and practices; applies that knowledge to the organization’s fundraising goals and acts as a resource for other team members. S/he is responsible for building relationships with closely aligned teams in Marketing, Communications and Conservation to ensure consistency of organizational messaging and materials and to foster greater organizational collaboration. S/he may support Executive Team fundraising by maintaining close relationships with Global Conservation Leadership as assigned and ensuring these individuals and their teams have the necessary materials, training and support as they engage with the organization’s top donors.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Responsible for designing materials for donors giving at the $5 million+ level.
  • Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks in the absence of specific instructions and exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
  • Does not supervise any staff but may manage work of peers on departmental project teams.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures, and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget, processing invoices and transfers, and negotiating and contracting with vendors.
  • Manage an account or client relationship.
  • Manage projects with several variables, set realistic deadlines, manage a timeline, and ensure accountability.
  • May provide oversight for a key function of the team.
  • Provide input through project teams for the development and implementation of new initiatives or the improvement of existing programs.
  • Travel and work overtime as needed.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • Work is diversified and may not always fall under established practices and guidelines.
  • Work within scope of program’s strategic goals.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience working across departments.
  • Experience with current technology in design.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of design and visual communications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work comfortably with senior leaders and cross-functional teams.
  • Broad understanding and experience with digital media software and Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Demonstrated fluency in Adobe Premiere Pro and/or Final Cut Express & Final Cut Studio.
  • Practical knowledge of marketing and branding principles.
  • Solid knowledge of marketing principles, hands-on design skills and production savvy.
  • Strong organization skills, accuracy, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Thrives in fast-paced environments, often with varying degrees of detail and direction.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience are appreciated.
  • Ability to implement complex processes.
  • Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results.
  • Demonstrated experience using diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate staff.
  • Experience coordinating projects.
  • Experience interpreting guidelines to achieve desired results.
  • Successful experience implementing strategic program goals.
