The Communications Manager provides support for a wide range of internal and external communications activities focusing on keeping staff informed and engaged, and on increasing ACT donor and general public awareness of ACT’s efforts.

The Communications Manager is primarily responsible for formulating and implementing ACT’s internal and external communications strategies. This position is responsible for producing creative and dynamic content in coordination with country office and program staff. Finally, the Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing internal communications initiatives, coordinating with local communications staff to ensure regular, timely and relevant flow of information throughout the organization to support improved employee engagement.

Reports To

  • Reports to: Executive Vice President
  • Collaborates with: President, Development team, Communications staff and leadership of ACT’s international offices
  • Supervises: Communications and Assistant, Communications & Programs, subject to change. 
Areas of Responsibility: 

General

  • Identifying department outputs and outtakes, and measuring impact
  • Determining communications project priorities and providing input on how to effectively and efficiently allocate financial and human resources
  • Serving as liaison with communications staff from ACT branch offices to coordinate external and internal communications initiatives

 

External Communications Strategy

  • In coordination with communications staff from ACT branch offices, developing and coordinating communications outputs calendar (including traditional media, special events, and digital and printed products)
  • Providing support for the effective execution of local and sub-regional dissemination strategies based on the different national realities
  • Serve as spokesperson for ACT-US and providing spokesperson training to office staff
  • Seeking media partners to publish ACT content and writing story pitches and news releases for those media outlets. In addition, establishing and maintaining ties with reporters
  • Coordinating media requests and follow up, while serving as the media contact as needed
  • Monitoring dissemination outcomes and media presence to prepare reports on results
  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of external communication activities
  • Coordinating production for communications print initiatives, including the annual report, brochures, mail pieces and other collateral materials

Internal Communications Initiatives

  • Designing and implementing an internal communication strategy that supports the organization’s goals and promotes ACT identity within staff
  • Continuous improvement of core internal communication channels and establishment of new channels using a full range of technology tools to ensure local and overseas staff is kept informed
  • Working closely with communications staff from ACT branch offices and other departments to develop plans to communicate specific initiatives within a structured and coherent framework
  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of internal communication activities

Content Generation and Dissemination

  • In collaboration with other staff, writing and/or coordinating digital and print content for ACT-wide use, including ACT websites, internal and external newsletters, ACT social media platforms, presentations and donor appeals, annual report, brochures, mail pieces and other collateral materials
  • Writing and editing press material (pamphlets, opinion articles, press releases, and mailing list content)

Coordination of Social Media

  • Planning, implementing, managing and monitoring ACT’s social media strategy
  • Managing of ACT president’s social media accounts
  • Design social media posts and write social media content

Website

  • Serving as front-end manager of the ACT website
  • Managing content to be published on the website and maintenance calendar

Management and Curation of Audiovisual Content

  • Organizing and updating ACT’s audiovisual library and photographic archives
  • Overseeing transfer of photo and video content from ACT offices to ACT-US staff
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in communications-related field
Skills/Experience: 

Required Qualifications

  • At least seven years of practical experience in communications, marketing or a related field, ideally in the nonprofit sector
  • Knowledge of basic HTML/CSS and content management platforms such as WordPress
  • Aptitude with basic social media platforms and content management software (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Hootsuite) and comfort level with learning web-based applications (e.g., MailChimp)
  • Experience with media content creation
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to speak and work (deliver presentations, lead discussions and training) in English and Spanish
  • Familiarity with one other major language ACT works in (e.g., Portuguese, Dutch) is a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with Office 365 applications
  • Knowledge of key conservation issues in the Amazon and familiarity with conservation by indigenous peoples and other local communities
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred

  • Diplomacy and good interpersonal skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure and not lose sight of strategic priorities

Physical Requirements

  • This position will be working in a typical office setting, with no extremes in temperature or lighting. 
  • Domestic and international travel may be required; may require working extended and/or varied work hours, including on weekends.
  • Applicants should be able to work with equipment typically found in an office and should be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without accommodation.
Compensation/Benefits:
