The Conservation GIS Intern will join the Audubon Alaska team based in Anchorage, Alaska for the summer of 2019. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Conservation GIS Intern will manage and maintain conservation databases and provide geospatial analytical support in GIS or other related technologies to the Audubon Alaska team.
Areas of Responsibility:
Work with Audubon Alaska team on large complex conservation initiatives.
- Work with agencies, universities, and other nongovernmental organizations to collect, organize, manage, and update large spatial databases for Alaska. Digitize data and develop GIS databases, as needed.
- Conduct spatial analysis and/or modeling for conservation planning in priority landscapes of Alaska.
- Maintain geospatial data on landscapes, habitats, wildlife populations, development, and natural resources.
- Support Audubon Alaska programs with cartographic services including design of maps, reports, and web maps that creatively and effectively communicate scientific findings and conservation priorities.
- Help communicate science and conservation issues to the general public through presentations, contributing writing to reports, blog posts, or social media.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in ecology, biology, geography, environmental studies or related field.
Skills/Experience:
- Experience managing, maintaining, and populating GIS databases.
- Proficient with the ESRI geospatial software suite.
- Experience producing maps and/or graphic products.
- Experience with Microsoft Office suite, Python, R or SQL skills are a plus.
- Must be self-motivated and willing to work in a flexible, non-structured environment.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability and willingness to travel locally and out-of-state and be comfortable with working evenings and weekends as job demands.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Valid driver's license is necessary.
