The internship opportunities are open to current students or recent graduates of a college program. The intern is expected to demonstrate a keen interest in nonprofits, as well as interest in a field of study related to the position. 

The 211 team at United Way Worldwide (2-1-1 UWW Team) provides coordination at the national level to a diverse network of over 200 211s teams across the country. 211 is a vital community service accessed by millions of Americans every year. People call 211 for help with a wide range of social services and resources, including food, housing, utilities payment assistance, health care, transportation, child care, employment opportunities, mental health crises, disaster information and assistance, and more. Highly trained 211 specialists provide expert, caring help that addresses not only the presenting issue but underlying challenges people are facing as well.   

The 211 UWW Team is seeking an intern to support its efforts to provide knowledge and data management support to the 211 Network. This intern will work closely with the Manager, 211 to execute agreed-upon tasks.   

Areas of Responsibility: 

The intern will support several 211 Team priorities and strategic projects, primarily by designing and implementing better processes and systems to streamline support to the network and increase capacity. These may include, but are not limited to:  

  • Identifying and capturing best practices, including donor engagement, and media mentions of 211 to be used in network communications and future reports   
  • In tandem with local call center staff, researching, identifying and implementing new opportunities to communicate with 2-1-1 network and track activities within the network, including developing and implementing a social media strategy for 211 
  • Creating content for and/or seek opportunities to share "evergreen" news stories about 211 with national trade journals/media outlets and other national associations that intersect with issues addressed by 211 
  • Supporting efforts to secure grants, contracts, and funding by conducting research, surveys, etc.   
  • Assisting in delivering an improved national data collection strategy to capture 211 impact  
  • Researching topical issues to support the development of tools and resources for UWW 211 and local 211s  
  • Other tasks as assigned 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Prior knowledge and use of Microsoft Excel desired  
  • Knowledge of and experience with social media platforms preferred 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and articulate problem statements and solutions  
  • Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently   
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a demonstrated background or interest in creating new, effective solutions and processes   
  • Previous experience with documenting or developing internal processes and protocols for effective implementation  
  • Comfortable working daily with a computer to complete work
