The Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) is a DC and Hampton Roads-based nonprofit with a mission to reintegrate veterans, service members, and military families into their communities through the arts. We promote expression, skill-development, and camaraderie through classes, workshops, and performances across a variety of artistic disciplines. This critical role reports to ASAP’s Board of Directors and is uniquely positioned to advance the organization’s mission and expand its impact.

Areas of Responsibility:

Strategic Thinking & Vision Setting

  • Provide vision, direction, and oversight for ASAP, allowing the organization to maximize its impact in the the short and longer terms
  • Establish organization-wide annual goals that are both ambitious and realistic, and aligned with the strategic vision and growth objectives
  • Serve as an ambassador and leader within the broader ASAP and Veterans community; continue to invest in and build out ASAP’s research priorities to further establish ASAP as a learning organization
  • Collaborate with Board Chair and Board of Directors to continuously improve ASAP’s strategy, fundraising, programs, and operations; partner with Board Chair to enhance the size and efficacy of the organization’s Board of Directors
  • Spearhead significant volume of work that ranges from strategic to tactical, shifting nimbly between high-level strategic priorities and immediate operational priorities

  • Coach, develop, manage, and lead ASAP’s team of full- and part-time staff across different geographies
  • Embody and support ASAP’s culture to balance results-orientation with fun, vibrancy, and collaboration
  • Provide executive oversight across key aspects of ASAP’s multi-faceted program (e.g., planning, implementation, evaluation, etc.)
  • Build and design processes, systems, and protocols needed to ensure operational excellence and prepare for ASAP’s growth, both financially and geographically

Relationship Building & Revenue Generation

  • Serve as key external voice and representative for ASAP, acting as ambassador and advocate with all critical stakeholders
  • Grow a sustainable, diversified funding base (e.g., events, individuals, corporations, foundations, etc.), allowing ASAP to maintain and increase its $600K budget past the $1M threshold
  • Build strategic relationships with external partners (e.g., foundations, entertainment industry, program partners, etc. ), enabling ASAP to effectively and efficiently serve its community
  • Nurture relationships within ASAP’s community (e.g., staff, program partners, participants, teaching artists, audiences) to foster programmatic excellence and overall development of the community itself
  • Cultivate and support regional and national supporters, working closely with the Board of Directors to expand ASAP’s visibility
Skills/Experience:
  • You have 10+ years of dynamic experience with increasing levels of responsibility leading a diverse cross-section of organizational functions; this includes strategic and operational planning, fundraising, developing and executing programs, building teams, and managing accounting and compliance
  • You are committed to and moved by ASAP’s vision of enriching the lives of veterans through the arts and community, and you want to engage participants, volunteers, mentors, alumni and instructors as partners in building this together
  • You respect ASAP’s nonpartisan orientation, you believe in the importance of cultivating a fully-inclusive community, and you are committed to leaving personal political views at the door
  • You are energized by working in a fast-paced, start-up environment where you balance competing priorities with long-term strategic goals and immediate organizational needs; you are equally comfortable working at the 30,000 foot level as you are at getting into the weeds and doing the dirty work
  • You are disciplined, have a high energy level, and have the ability to execute ambitious plans across all functional areas with limited resources
  • You possess exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the intellectual depth and maturity to work with staff, Board members, and others in programmatic and development-related activities
  • You have strong relationship building skills, with a track record of establishing buy-in across stakeholders and influencing diverse groups of individuals and networks to achieve outcomes
  • You are an exceptional communicator and storyteller--both in written and verbal forms--and have the charisma and humor to use words to inspire in multiple formats with diverse audiences
  • You thrive when coaching and managing others through change; you are confident leading staff one-on-ones, planning meetings, quarterly check-ins, and even having difficult conversations when necessary—and you are driven to promote a positive and supportive team culture
  • You are confident developing and managing budgets in partnership with ASAP’s accounting vendor, Program Director, and the Board
  • You are excited to lead and attend ASAP programs on evenings and/or weekends—this is when ASAP hosts its programming and performances
  • You have the ability to travel along the East Coast up to 35% of the time, with increased and/or expanded travel needed as the organization grows and expands
Compensation/Benefits:

The Executive Director role will pay $100K.
